iTunes Review

Mariah Carey was granted diva status early in her recording career, and on the merits of pure vocal mastery, the honors were justified. But the material didn’t always match the quality of her voice, and 1991’s Emotions, her sophomore effort, highlights both the strengths and limitations of her initial releases. Its tracks mix gospel-rooted ballads with simmering dance-pop tunes, all produced with smooth efficiency and well-balanced taste. Carey handles her part with aplomb, swooping and gliding through upbeat numbers like “To Be Around You,” “Make it Happen,” and the title track. (“You’re So Cold” is the best of this bunch, filled with Mariah’s gorgeously throbbing embellishments.) The album’s ballads — “If It’s Over,””Can’t Let Go” and “The Wind” — capture her reveling in romantic torment at both ends of her extraordinary range. “Till the End of Time” gives a taste of the dreamy, bruise-tender vocalizing Carey would emphasize a few albums later. Emotions may be deficient in truly exceptional songwriting and rely upon fairly stock R&B and pop arrangement ideas, but in terms of the singing captured, its standard is consistently high. Mariah’s diva-hood is never in doubt.

My favorite CD of ALL time! nobody can sing like her...

Best album of 1991!!!!

This was Mariah's (long before "Mimi") sophomore album after her huge breakout self-titled first album "Mariah Carey." Three singles were released from this album, the title track "Emotions", "Can't Let Go", and "Make It Happen." However, you can still hear most of the other songs being played (unofficially) on easy listening stations. (Personal note: I feel "So Blessed" should have also been released as a single -- listen to it, it's great!) There's one song missing from this iTunes album, "If It's Over", which she co-wrote with Carole King and should've come right after "Make It Happen." "Emotions" was the second of three studio albums (not including the "MTV Unplugged" or "Merry Christmas" albums) where she focused (or was forced to focus by the powers that be at the time, i.e, Mr. T.M.) on a Pop sound, before moving into R&B.

This album is often overlooked when discussing Mariah's discography. Emotions, released just months after the I Don't Wanna Cry (the 4th single from her self-titled debut) this collection of songs picks up where the first cd ends. Although it contains some of the same powerhouse vocals and big ballads, the collection is deepened by more uptempo numbers with an R&B flare that was missing from her debut. Cliviles and Cole (the hot producers of the early 90's) are on board for 4 of the cuts, including the first single Emotions, which was Mariah's 5th consecutive #1. They also bring some much needed soul to the 3rd single, Make it Happen on which pre-Mimi Mariah kills. For fans of her debut's big ballads, check out Til The End of Time and The Wind, which jazz up the procedings a bit. Overall a great collection and a sign that Mariah's initial success was no fluke.

The best-selling female performer of the 1990s and one of the most popular artists through the 2010s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice. An elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by co-writing almost all her material. Like all artists with lengthy periods in the mainstream spotlight, Carey experienced creative...
