Album Review

With the Album Leaf, Jimmy LaValle has become one of the leading forces in ambient indie rock. If avoiding the potential pitfalls of LaValle's chosen subgenre seem difficult — where tranquility flirts with blandness — Seal Beach finds the Album Leaf priding itself on melody and structure. Originally issued in 2003 as an EP in Spain, this North American version boasts five previously unreleased live tracks realized with the help of one-time tourmates Sigur Rós plus one studio rarity, "For Jonathan." Sadly beautiful glitch-hop may be the best way to describe "Malmo," which thrives thanks to lilting elements, but the warm piano tone and percussion boost of "Brennivin" and the soft, synth-carved touches of the title track stand out. Simply crafted and routinely soothing in nature, Seal Beach glimmers with the hypnotic and engaging wares of LaValle. [This version of the EP contains bonus tracks.] ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi

I have never heard anything quite like these guys. I just found them a week or two ago and they are amazing. Perfect for unwinding and relaxing to. Great music to listen to to help you sleep well. Great music to listen to anytime, anywhere.

Wonderfully emotional

The Brazilians have a word for this in my mind, Saudade or "Happy melancholy" somewhat sad but also a spark of happiness as well in their compositions. Wonderfully textured, deep and mystical in moments. A masterfully constructed wokrk full of feeling and soul touching if one allows such intimacy. Recommended for all who desire deep self moments. Wonderfully emotional.

The Album Leaf began as the solo project of Jimmy LaValle, a San Diego-based songwriter who started recording solo material one year after forming the post-rock band Tristeza. Inspired by a number of genres -- classical, jazz, and post-rock among them -- LaValle constructed his own songs in a similarly eclectic manner, utilizing everything from ambient noise to field recordings to radio transmissions. An Orchestrated Rise to Fall introduced the resulting sound in 1999. An EP (In an Off White Room)...
