iTunes Editors’ Notes

Three Dog Night were built on the tripartite vocal blend of Chuck Negron, Danny Hutton, and Cory Wells and boasted an unbelievably accomplished backing band that featured the undersung guitar heroics of one Michael Allsup, a guy whose playing is as dirty as it is sweet. Three Dog Night made their name creating hits (scoring more than 20 Top 40 American hits between 1968 and 1975) of choice tunes by great songwriters: There’s Laura Nyro (“Eli’s Coming”), Harry Nilsson (“One”), Randy Newman (“Mama Told Me Not to Come”), Allen Toussaint (“Play Something Sweet),” Roger Nichols and Paul Williams (“Out in the Country”), Daniel Moore (“Shambala”), and more. The three singers were uncannily soulful, too; listen to Wells doing Otis Redding’s version of “Try a Little Tenderness” or Hutton on Earl Robinson’s reggae tilt “Black and White." The brass- and organ-rich arrangements set a tone that fit smoothly into the '70s radio milieu, minus the spackled-on sentiment. This one-stop shop collects all the Three Dog Night hits and performances that helped define that decade.

Outstanding.

I'm a fan of classic rock and this certainly satisfied me. After hearing "Shambala", I decided to buy this album. I had not really heard of Three Dog Night, but I had heard some of their songs... "Shambala", and "Mama Told Me" are my two favorites, and this is a great deal for the amount of great music you get. Twenty-one songs! Definitely worth the buy.

One of the best bands of the late 60's early 70's

This is one of the best bands of the late 60's and early 70's. I rank this group up with all the other greats such as: Chicago, CCR, Blood Sweat and Tears and Crosby, Stills and Nash. They have a good solid rock sound. One thing that is unique about this collection is that it contains the hit single versions of the songs. The other greatest hits packages contained the album versions. I tend to like the ending of "An Old Fashioned Love Song" better on the hit single version, because it has more life to it. If you already have the other greatest hits packages, you may still want to get this one as well.

If you don't know these songs...

A lot of people probably don't know this band, but EVERYONE knows their songs. 'One', 'Joy to the World', 'Shambala', 'Black and White' just to name a few. They all Rock thouh....

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura...
