40 Songs, 1 Hour 57 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

For an artist like Merle Haggard, who just got better as the years passed, a collection of re-recordings of his best-loved tunes offers an opportunity to hear some of his early hits rendered with the musical maturity and sophistication he developed as he evolved. Honky-tonk staples like "The Bottle Let Me Down" and "Mama Tried" benefit from the gently jazzy lilt the outlaw-country icon eventually added to his sonic tool kit. And the ballads are rendered with an even greater degree of nuance and emotional gravitas.

Poor Audio

Great to have all these songs at such a low price BUT the recording levels on this CD are pretty bad. There is a lot of clipping (particularly on the left side for some reason). I've checked many other albums that I own to make sure it wasn't my speakers, but this is the only album that has the issue.

40 Greatest Hits of Merle Haggard

Finding 40 of Merle's music- most were hits - in one buy is simply put outstanding. Sure, not all were from his original cuts but this collection are all sung by the Great Merle Haggard himself. If you're a fan, you'll catch yourself crying as you remember your Momma as Merle sing's of his. No one most of us have ever heard in our lives have the heart and soul Merle Haggard put into his music and shared with such a unique voice.

1 star only because these are not original versions.

5 stars for Merle's originals versions of these songs. 1 star for this 40 Greatest Hits package because these are not the originals. I completely agree with the reviewer DevinM. I too, am quite concerned that younger people wanting to discover Merle, will not know the difference. Attention… if you are a new Merle fan, please do yourself a favor and do not start here. Seek out the original versions. So much better. Buy his records that were on Capitol, MCA, Epic, or any from his own Hag label.
