Album Review

The 1990 debut of Urban Dance Squad revealed a band smashing the boundaries between rock, funk, punk, metal, and hip-hop. "Fast Lane" leads the program with a blistering groove powered by chugging guitar and sampled horns. Later, "Brainstorm on the U.D.S." alternates rap verses with a punky shoutalong chorus, while "The Devil" borrows a murky string bassline and greasy slide guitar from the Tom Waits bag. Rudeboy never really sings; rather, he raps or — when the song demands it — sort of chants along in a singsong cadence. But for a non-singer he has a great voice, one that comes from the chest but has a sharp enough edge to cut through the mix. Also notable are polymath guitarist Tres Manos and the unbelievably funky bass of Silly Sil. [This reissue includes a bonus live disc that documents an alternately metallish and bluesy (!) Hollywood concert from 1990.]

The Urban Dance Squad has finally arrived to the party

So it's 1989. The Urban Dance Squad (Rudeboy Remmington - vocals, Tres Manos - guitars, Sil - bass, Magic Stick - drums, and DJ DNA) from Utrecht, Netherlands decide to come together, and record their first album, "Mental Floss for the Globe." Little did anyone know, the world was waiting for this. There isn't a bad track on this album. Moods shift from song to song but the entire album flows very nicely. Some standout tracks are the masterpiece, "Deeper Shade of Soul", the ultra funky "Fast Lane", the jazzy sound poem "The Devil", and the experimental "Mental Floss for the Globe." A undefinable sound that still sounds fresh today. I'd suggest you purchase this entire album. I still have my beat up CD from 1990 lying around here somewhere. But now that UDS has found their way to ITunes, it has been worth the wait. Please check UDS out NOW!! You won't regret it.

It's about time!!!

One of my first CD purchases when I was in highschool and over time I lost it. I've been trying to hunt down a digital copy for years now but they were not available. But they are finally here!!!

Just listening to the demos takes me back to my skater days in the 90's. Poppin' kick flips over parking blocks while UDS was blaring in the back ground on my boom box. There is nothing that will get you reved up and chill within one CD like Mental Floss.

Buy this... you won't regret it!

UDS! Awesome!!!

I love these guys. Had the CD in 1990. Used to skate halfpipes and curbs to it all the time. 311, Kid Rock, and Beck all need to tip their hats to these guys. They paved the way. If you haven't heard it. Buy it...You'll love it.

Formed: 1986 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

The Amsterdam-based rock/rap collective Urban Dance Squad began in 1986, playing and jamming together on an informal basis. They played a gig at the Utrecht Festival and, surprised by the raves their performance drew, became a more serious project. The group gigged for two years, and with the proceeds released 1990's Mental Floss for the Globe. Urban Dance Squad's mix of rock, rap, funk, ska, folk, hip-hop, and soul signaled the trend toward genre-bending that prevailed in '90s music. Mental Floss...
