Album Review

The best way to describe Boy Hits Car, the sophomore effort from the band of the same name, is to combine the elements of a few of their contemporaries. Take the angst and urgency of At the Drive-In, toss in a dash of the playful singing style of System of a Down, and mix in the generic Korn-knockoff riffing of Hed(Pe). What you get is a band with a lot of good intentions and a great singer, but lacking in songwriting skills. Songs like "I'm a Cloud" drip with urgency due to the fantastic vocals of Cregg, but are easily forgotten due to the sadly pedestrian songwriting. The good news is that the band really does show a lot of potential, and at times that potential turns into real songs, like the trippy "Going to India." But the band still needs a lot of work, and this album is still pretty forgettable despite all the good elements. Fans of the aforementioned artists may want to give this a listen, but otherwise it probably would not go over well with others.

Customer Reviews

I don't know what the 'official' reviewer was listening to...

First of all, Boy Hits Car is a very unique band. If you listen to all of their music then I don't think you can truly compare them to any other band. And as far as the review talking about the lyrics and writing being mediocre, that's just a flat out lie. If you take the time to look them up, because well...it is quite hard to understand Cregg at times, then you will see just how powerful his writing is. Buy this CD!!! It will not let you down at all. Thumbs up if you agree :D

Honestly, just buy it now, and ignore the imbecile that reviewed it. I heard "I'm a Cloud" on the Agressive Inline video game for PS2 and it was one of my all time favorites for forever. It wasn't until a while later that I decided to figure out what band actually played the song, but once I did, I was pleasantly suprised by the fact that the rest of the album that contained that track was no less amazing from start to finish. This is a cd that you can pop in and straight up rock out to, there's no "if's" "and's" or "but's" about it. And the experimentation with Eastern influences makes for an interesting listen on top everything, not to mention the unique vocal styles featured throughout. The only "low" points of the album are on "A Letter From Prison" and "Before We Die," but even those songs are better than 75% of what's on the radio these days. Bottom line: If you don't have this album, you are missing out big time. Buy it now. And after you do, make sure to find the track that iTunes stupidly left off of the end of the album, "Lovepassionfuryenergy," because that is one of the better songs found here, and the experience of this album is incomplete without it.

Reviewer is insane

The reviewer is insane - he probably didn't even listen to the CD. This is one of my all time favorite CD's - I hope they come back with another hard rocking CD as The Passage was a bit lighter than this one, but still very goo. Best comparison I can make is that they are what Incubus should sound like now, rather than the wimpy radio-friendly garbage they've put out the last 3 CDs.

Formed: 1993

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

In 1990, childhood friends Scott (bass), Louis (guitar), and CRegg (vocals/guitar) initially formed the aggressive rock sound they would create in the band Boy Hits Car three years later. Singing of typical teenage trials and tribulations, Boy Hits Car inked a deal to independently release My Animal in 1998. They were now firmly planted in Los Angeles during this time, but opted for another record deal and signed with Wind-Up...
