Album Review

Margaret Slovak, a talented guitarist who spent time in New York before settling in Portland, has an attractive and fairly original sound on both acoustic and electric guitars, along with a lyrical improvising style. This CD, put out on her own label, consists of 14 unaccompanied guitar solos. Slovak performs a dozen of her picturesque and thoughtful originals, plus "Manha de Carnaval" and "Blue In Green." The interpretations are usually taken at a low volume, but there is a great deal of inner heat just beneath the surface. Her CD should be played fairly loud so its subtleties are not lost, and so the melodic variations are not mistaken for being merely superior background music. Margaret Slovak has a great deal of talent, and hopefully the release of this recording will result in her becoming better known.
