Album Review

Quicksand's heavy metal is distinguished not by the band's hooks but by its precision — they grind their riffs into the ground, never alleviating their intensity. Manic Compression isn't as murky as Quicksand's major-label debut and it contains tighter, better-constructed songs, all of which makes the band's deliberate lack of melody excusable. Then again, the point isn't melody — Quicksand is about sheer sound, in all of its distorted glory. If you like that sound, the album delivers the goods.

Customer Reviews

Less dated than many current artists.

I'm glad, in a way, that Quicksand didn't stick together to make any more albums after Manic Compression- it would have been anti-climactic. If you listen closely you can still hear the hooks in these songs that bands today are still lifting for their own efforts. It's nearly a crime that this album or their previous effort, Slip, never gained the attention they deserved. Often referred to as a prime example of emo, I'm not sure that's true. Quicksand was much too tight for that. They left a raw edged quality in this recording that makes it seem like they just went into the studio and threw it down, but you'll note that they carefully mixed the vocals back not to muddy them, but to add more dynamic punch. Manic Compression, even a decade later, sounds as original and solid as it did in '95. Crank it up.

Deserted Island Album

One of the top 10 greatest heavy albums of all time... Quicksand is one of the most overlooked, underrated bands ever to release music. Approximatley 20 years ahead of their time, bands are still trying to find some sembelance of what Quicksand did. Slip and Manic Compression are easily 2 of the best heavy albums ever made. Hands Down, buy it.

The Best

There are way to many bands that owe it ALL to Quicksand and Helmet. It's a shame these guys still don't record. Where is the music?

Formed: 1990 in New York City, NY

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

The alternative metal band Quicksand emerged from the New York City hardcore scene of the late '80s; before coming together in 1990, singer/guitarist Walter Schreifels, guitarist Tom Capone, bassist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage all honed their chops in a series of local acts, including Youth of Today, the Gorilla Biscuits, and Bold and Beyond. A self-titled EP soon followed, and in 1992, Quicksand issued their Polygram debut, Slip, earning airplay with the single "Dine Alone." After touring...
