iTunes Review

With a family lineage that suggests good things, Shooter Jennings has proved ambitious, releasing albums that explore a variety of musical approaches. With Family Man, he's back in the country arena, letting his natural voice enjoy a run with a backing group he's dubbed The Triple Crown. Hints of his father Waylon's musical legacy can be heard in the perfectly arranged "The Deed and the Dollar" and in the spirited "The Long Road Ahead," which features Eleanor Whitmore's harmony vocals and mandolin and Tom Morello's guitar. "Summer Dreams (Al's Song)" catches the simple, modestly adorned beauty of a '70s outlaw-country ballad. Jennings stays true to his father's style, recording country music that retains the music's purest flavorings without indulging modern country music's need for bigger, sweetened sounds. "Southern Family Anthem" allows a touch of rock 'n' roll, but it's still with a juke-joint band's passion, and Jennings sounds defiant and proud as he revels in his rebel status. "We may be trash, but we're a family," he sings. Poignant, humorous, and musically resonant, Shooter Jennings is the real deal.

Customer Reviews

Shooter never releases an album that is anything short of amazing. This album though, is his strongest release. The production, vocals, and songwriting on this album are top notch. Definitely an instant classic!

A True Family Man

Simply Amazing! Shooter has gone back to his Country roots and mixed in his own dose of Rock. This is one of those albums that you can just play over and over and never get sick of it! Been a fan for a long time, and couldn't be happier! Congrats Shooter, you did it again!

You had me at Black Ribbons...

Shooter Jennings is an incredible artist. PERIOD! Country, Rock, Psychedelic....whatever! He is an artist and this album is excellent singing and songwriting, like usual.

The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument. He discovered guitar at 14 and rock & roll (particularly Southern rock and the loose-limbed hard rock of Guns N' Roses) at 16. Soon he moved from Nashville...
