Album Review

From the label that gave you the solo works of Keith Jarrett, here's another improvising solo pianist, Italy's Stefano Bollani, who comes from all over the place stylistically and isn't shy to say so. On his debut solo disc — following a number of albums with trumpeter Enrico Rava — Bollani can improvise on Prokofiev, trip along through a Dixieland standard like "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?," set Lerner & Loewe's "On the Street Where You Live" to a gentle boogie rhythm, turn out splendidly intricate paraphrases on "Maple Leaf Rag," and quietly but not complacently conclude with Brian Wilson's "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)." He also likes to make improbable associations — "Desafinado" pokes its head in and out of the tango "A Media Luz." For the most part, all of this is filtered through a distinct, poetic, never flashy for its own sake (although "Buzzillare" comes close) improvising personality, a lovely touch, and a concise sense of structure and instinct as to when to quit (only one track pushes over six minutes and most are between three and four minutes). Originally, this was to be an all-Prokofiev-based album, but only one such number made the final cut, "On a Theme by Sergey Prokofiev" (from the Piano Concerto No. 1, and in this rumination, just barely recognizable as such). "Promenade," though, has some harmonic shifts that resemble some of Prokofiev's quick-change tactics. By the way, Bollani is also a published novelist — but here he concerns himself with short stories, often exquisite ones. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

"Piano Solo"-Stefano Bollani

A rather curious "free download" sample; the only choice I get is "Buy Album".....well, I guess all I can do is rate this according to the short samples. I always like the players who are well-versed in classics to Stockhausen, but also have a good jazz sensibility...he can make his atonal improvisations really swing, and the really "out" interpretations of "...New Orleans" and Joplin still pay a good homage. Not to mention, Mr. Bollani's expressiveness and dynamics hit you in the heart as well. For piano freaks, this is a really strong helping. I still hope I get my free sample someday, and hear a selection in its entirety.

Watch Out Brad Mehldau...Here Comes Mr. Bollani

This is the most eclectic and prolific piano recording I've heard since Keith Jarrett fused myriad Western styles into a bag of his own with 'Facing You'. I love this guy. His fat lower-register cluster chords recall the Oscar Peterson of the "Exclusively For My Friends" era, but overall this is a new brand of solo piano that's exciting and loaded with the heart and sensitivity that Brad Mehldau wishes he had.

visionary work

This album is hard to put down. Bollani puts together an avant garde solo, but also keeps it enjoyable. Tell your friends... this album is worth buying.

Jazz pianist Stefano Bollani was born in Milan, Italy, on December 5, 1972. He began playing piano as a child in order to accompany his singing, but soon concentrated solely on the instrument, enrolling in a conservatory in Florence when he was 11. There, he studied both jazz and pop music, and after graduating in 1993, added his keyboard skills to albums for many of Italy's top pop stars, including Laura Pausini, Irene Grandi, and Jovanotti. When working with the latter in 1996 he met avant-garde...
