Album Review

Like so many of the big names of the '40s, Morales went from enormous popularity to total oblivion. Which is a major pity, since he was very important in the early days of New York salsa as a main creator of a quintet style that blended jazz with classic Cuban piano. This late-period album documents both the brillance and the prolixity of a musician long overdue for a reassessment.

Noro Morales was born in Puerto Rico in 1911 and came to New York in 1935, where he played briefly with the bands of Alberto Socarras and Augusto Coen before establishing the Brothers Morales (Noro-Humberto-Esy) orchestra in 1939. The 1942 Decca 78 "Serenata R¡tmica" gave Morales instant recognition....
