Future of Funk

Don't let the above review fool you. This is not your ol' man's hip-hop stock. Bullfrog uses nearly every track on this compilation to introduce an exceedingly tight, modern take on classic funk fundamentals. Not over-produced, it retains the organic feel of live turntables, but is clean enough to show off the talent of all the band members. "Alright: Music for More Morning People" is an instant classic. Starting in random pre-groove noise, the band, in an apparent miracle, arrives on first downbeat in perfect sync, never again to stray. To call this a groove band is a tremendous undersell. Most of the full length tracks have clear progressions and structure that is both satisfying while catchy. This album may not appeal to Radio Head fans, but Funk-o-philes will flip. Don't take my word for it: the audio previews are enough to discover how this release will make it into your "My Popular" playlist.

Fans of Kid Koala should pick this up, and funk fans

Little known to many who happen to stumble across this album... Eric San does the turntables on this record.. Eric San is better known as the amazingly gifted turntable artist Kid Koala. The album takes kid's turn table skills but instead of them stealing the show like on his solo records, kid kinda haunts the background adding the little subtle touches he's known for that really compliment the funky grooves played by the rest of the group, and occasionally coming to the foreground. The resulting effect is a pretty fresh sounding combination of funk and hip-hop that actually works. I wonder if Kid and the gang will ever re-assemble for another collaboration of this likes.

One of my all time favorite albums

A friend of mine used to have this record many years ago and I was fortunate enough to acquire a copy of my own. I’ve been listening to this album for a good 12 years now and I still love all the songs on this album. From the catchy upbeat “Reverse Psychology” and “Music for morning people” to the funky “Yaya” and the awesome “Snakeskin”, this album his something for everyone to love, and if you are like me, you will love it all. But I think the real gems are the slower, extremely beautiful and soulful tracks such as “Mark After Dark”, “Shine” and “Slow Down”. I still giggle whenever I am driving and “Slow Down” randomly plays on my car stereo. Much to be loved on this album.
