Album Review

A generous 15 tracks breathing new life into well-worn standards like "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by focusing on their potential as good songs rather than distancing them on some solemn pedestal. When Cockburn sandwiches these between such non-conventional contributions as the gospel-bluegrass of "Early On One Christmas Morn," the Spanish "Riu Riu Riu," the French/world beat of "Les anges dans nos campagnes," the Huron Indian "Jesus Ahatonnia," and the ancient, spooky "Down In Yon Forest," the disc takes on a complex flavor that can be savored any time of the year.

Cockburn's Christmas

What a heavenly album! From many familiar carols, most with new twists, to some very old songs, this album leaves me in a reverie. I'm not terribly religious, but feel a soulful impact from the music and instrumentation. Every song is a revelation. Love "Riu Riu Chiu" and the "Huron Carol." Perfect for a cold winter's night as the holidays approach. I bought this years ago as a cassette, and was delighted to renew my acquaintance with it this year!

Still the First Christmas Album I Listen to Each Year

(I had a review up for this once upon a time...) I collect Christmas music, and each year this one gets the most playtime. Bruce has found a way to take the familiar and refresh it (O Little Town, Go Tell It, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear), but more importantly, he has found the obscure and has made them classics in my house. However, I challenge you to find a version of God Rest Ye with the same muted vitriol at the state of the World. Thank you, Bruce. Merry Christmas.

Amazing Work

This album is easily my favorite Christmas album. Cockburn's rootsy, folky, and cajun filled selections set this album apart from all the other Holiday works. An absolute classic in my mind.

Immensely popular in his native Canada, singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn has found only cult success south of the border, in spite of a rich, varied body of work and considerable critical nods. He has won numerous Juno Awards and has kept the quality control on most of his albums at a high level. Cockburn's first decade of work (1970-1979) is largely literate, singer/songwriter folk-rock, often with a strong Christian tone and mystical, devotional lyrics. In 1979, Cockburn had his only major U.S....
