iTunes Review

Patty Griffin has always had the vocal pipes. She has also shown great depth and versatility as a songwriter, able to squeeze emotion to the breaking point without settling for sentimentality. Flaming Red, Griffin’s second album, coming after the guitar and voice of Living With Ghosts, is her attempt to toughen up and try her hand at leading a more conventional and, therefore, commercial enterprise. While those familiar with her quieter and solemn moments will be taken aback by the unapologetic rock guitars that fuel “Tony” (the horror story of a young gay man’s suicide) and “Change,” those buckled in for the wilder ride will find a refreshing energy she rarely attempts anymore. Flaming Red represents an intriguing dimension for this singer-songwriter whose songs covered by the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride and Reba McEntire have now aligned her with a country-tinged following. The shuffling, country strains of “Goodbye” (which McBride covered) are closer to the performer she’s become. But half the fun here is hearing Griffin toying with something like the adult-contemporary keyboards and guitars of “Carry Me. “ It makes for pleasant surprises.

Attention: All Those With A Pulse

Do not pass by this album! Patty Griffin has a voice that is everything - hard and soft, big and small, young and old. This album will move anyone who hears it! And I say thank you Patty. Out of the entire catalog on iTunes, out of all the cds you could pick up out there, if you ask me - this would be the one. Can music be cathartic? Can music change your life?

Pure genius

Patty Griffin is one of those rare artists who not only have a great voice and can write well-crafted songs, but her music can make the listener FEEL the emotion behind the words. "Flaming Red" was my first Patty album, and it blew me away on the first listen. From the rock 'n' roll attitude of the title track to the sorrow of "Goodbye" to the jazz-influenced "Go Now," this album has it all. This is one album that doesn't have just one or two great songs; the whole record is worth your money. At $7.99, it's a bargain for some of the material one of music's most gifted artists has to offer. BUY. IT. NOW.
