The performance this work needed

This is really the recording of "Mass" that's been needed to present it as a valid and timeless work. This new recording of Bernstein's "Mass" manages to view it through the perspective of time, something that Nagano's recording didn't manage. For once it sounds like a single work, and although it's a product of its time, Jarvi takes it at face value and embraces its mix of styles (which can seem embarrassingly dated at times). No concessions need be made for the English skills of the singers, which is astonishing and another welcome change from the Nagano recording. Although the Celebrant isn't quite as passionate as Alan Titus (for Bernstein himself) or Hadley for Nagano, he does a very good job, and the commitment of all involved is palpable. Bravo Kristjan Jarvi and Chandos!

Great performance!

At last a really great recording of Bernstein's Mass other than his own. It's about time! Kristjan Jarvi gets it all right; the different styles are sharply realized with not one weak link among the soloists. Randell Scarlata is a wonderful Celebrant. I can't recommend this highly enough! It will be interesting to see if Alsop's new recording is as good.
