iTunes Review

In 2000, the Vancouver-based New Pornographers' debut album Mass Romantic took the indie-rock world by storm. With band members culled from other Canadian bands such as Zumpano and Limblifter, the group also featured the vocal talents of sultry-voiced alt-country diva Neko Case. Absolutely sparkling power pop is the result, with clear influences as wide-ranging as Big Star, the Zombies, the Beach Boys, and Cheap Trick. Each of Mass Romantic's twelve songs is a fully-realized pop creations unto itself -- intelligent, infectious, and uplifting, with flawless arrangements and soaring four-part harmonies. Picking highlights is near-impossible, but start with the title track, "Letter from an Occupant," and "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism."

Canadian Indie Rocks!

I heard _Letter from an Occupant_ last summer on the CBC Radio 3 Podcast. It's an AMAZING song. I've been trying to figure out how to hear more, and here they are on iTunes. If you like this band, check out the CBC Radio 3 Podcast (available from iTunes Podcasts) for a lot of other Canadian indie music that will ROCK your sicks off! Now if only Apple would get Controller.Controller loaded, I'd be in heaven!

Tremendous album, fantastic lyrics

A very strong album. Listen to it once and some songs will hook you quickly, like "Letter From An Occupant" and "Mass Romantic". Listen to it a few more times and a few others will catch your attention ala "Fake Headlines" and "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism". Then after time, you will come to realize that every song on here is amazing and you likely will realize that your favorite songs are those you first thought less of like "Execution Day" and my personal favorite "Jackie". On a side note, this album has amazing lyrics, just look at "Jackie": "Jackie you yourself said it best when you said, There's been a break in the continuum, The United States used to be lots of fun, Back when the man and the myth, And the sands and the cliffs, Composed a symphony to good works...and better business."

Not What I Usually Listen To

I will maintain til the day I die that I am a classic rock guy (Stones, Doors, Zeppelin, etc.)

So what the heck am I doing writing a review for the New Pornographers? Let me tell a quick story.

As I don't have a credit/debit card, I only can get new music when I... ehem... have iTunes money... or don't feel like getting it through other means (borrowing CDs from friends, what did you think I meant?) So one day, I'm perusing iTunes with $0.26 to my name and decide to look through the music podcasts. That's where I found NPR's All Songs Considered Live Concert Series. There's a concert in there by the New Pornographers totaling in at just under two hours. I downloaded it and was amazed. These guys while working in relative obscurity have written some of the best songs I've ever heard. They're bright, dark, poppy, downtrodden, and everything else in between. The instrumentalism is just as good as the song-writing.

So once I got some iTunes cash, I had to buy some of their material. I felt I owed them that.

Three cheers for the New Pornographers!

The Vancouver indie rock supergroup the New Pornographers features the talents of Zumpano's Carl Newman, the Evaporators' John Collins, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, cartoonist/filmmaker Blaine Thurier, drummer Fisher Rose, and guest vocalist Neko Case. Newman began the band in 1996 as a lark after releasing Zumpano's Goin' Through Changes; one by one, the other members joined the fold, and the New Pornographers' first official rehearsal took place in 1997. By the following year, the group had completed...
