Editors’ Notes

This exquisitely swinging album by the legendary Cuban bassist/composer Israel "Cachao" López opens with a short, almost classical clarinet and bowed-bass duet before slamming into "Isora Club," a blissful and timeless son montuno. Most tracks follow similar journeys: Afro-Cuban rumba and regal danzón melodies evolve into mambos and swooning band-and-chorus vamps, and the solos lend a magically mellow Cuba-meets-Dixieland feel. Cachao's bass floats through it all like a shiny, bulbous, vintage sedan gliding through Havana streets.

Master Sessions, Vol. 1

This album is magnificent! Play it during a dinner party. Listen to it on headphones! It is one of my favorite albums. I love to share it with passionate music lovers! Hope you enjoy it as well!

So I looked for the albums that he had something to do with and found this. It's rich, sexy, and screams culture. I love it. I normally don't appreciate talking in songs, but El Alcalde opens with an empassioned and almost melodic introduction by Andy Garcia. This makes me want to experience Cuba.

In tandem with his multi-instrumentalist brother Orestes, bassist Israel "Cachao" López introduced to Cuban music the African rhythms that transformed the island's traditional danzón into what is now known as the mambo -- he also pioneered the descarga, the late-night jam sessions that revolutionized the sound and scope of Afro-Cuban pop and jazz. Born in Havana on September 14, 1918, just over a decade after Orestes, Cachao was the product of a sprawling, multi-generational musical family. At age...
