iTunes Review

Madonna’s (lucky) star was still rising when Like a Virgin appeared near the end of 1984. She hadn’t nabbed a Number One hit with her earlier efforts, but this sophomore album’s title track took care of that as quickly as fluorescent-colored sweatshirts conquered the streets. Suddenly, Madonna was everywhere, a pop-culture icon who demanded that you love or hate her. Virgin made the former option easy, in part thanks to contributions by producer Nile Rodgers and his Chic cohorts Bernard Edwards (bass) and Tony Thompson (drums). It was propulsive dance-pop that would define the high-end of this music for years to come, and it remains fun today. This edition contains bonus mixes of “Virgin” and “Material Girl.”

uh...

come on now. one can only expect the best from MADONNA. she is a pop godess. if any one disagrees with me, then to them i say, "you are an idiot."

Great talent

I'll admit that I'm not a huge Madonna fan. But that's not to say I don't think she was an excellent artist. Like a Virgin and Material Girl are classic songs that I think everyone can appreciate.

The Start of a Pop Revolution

Oh....Like A Virgin! 1984 was a mega era for 80's music and established the musical sound of the decade. But the stand out star of the decade was Madonne with Like A virgin. After two decades, we have heard these songs a hundred times. But this is one of the best selling albums of all time and truly launched the Madonna juggernaut. Until this album, she was an underground star with Madonna. But Like A Virgin exploded in 1984 and never let go of her hold on pop culture. Girls empowered by her first album became absolutely crazy with independence after this album hit the charts and good for Madonna. I think this album started an anti-estiblishment, anti-Reagan movement not seen before. We all gyrated to Like A Virgin and relished Material Girl ironically as a screw you to our government. The only way you did not have this album in 1984 was if you were dead.

This monster masterpiece of coy innocence and overt sexuality sparked a revolution that carried through to the 90's. What many do not realize is that the freedom that women artists had in the 90's and this decade is due to the work of Blondie, Donna Summer, Stevie Nicks, and most importantly, Madonna.

I have worn this album out and after two decades I still enjoy the vibrancy and sheer unabashed innocence she delivers these tunes. However, over two decades, my favorite from this album is Angel. It was not a big hit back in the 80's, but I think it really shows what she achieved in later albums. It is dark, funky, and still seems fresh all these years.

After stars reach a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their personas. Madonna is such a star. She rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common. However, one of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she has manipulated the media and the public with...
