iTunes Review

When California singer/songwriter Matt Costa decided he needed a change of musical scenery, he embraced the idea geographically as well, journeying to Scotland to cut a record in Glasgow with Belle & Sebastian producer Tony Doogan, backed by members of B&S and other esteemed Scots. It should come as no great surprise that the album has more than a bit of a Belle & Sebastian flavor, with a rich melodic blend of folk-rock and orchestrated pop that alternates between bold production numbers (“Shotgun”) and soft, subtle, acoustic-oriented tracks (“Eyes for You”). The gentle-voiced Costa has a dash of Scottish troubadour Donovan in his delivery, so he fits in naturally with the Glasgow gang. They also get down to a bit of rocking, with the wry, horn-bedecked stomp-along “Good Times” and the insistently pounding paean to romance “Loving You” lending a touch of T. Rex to the proceedings. It all shows that Costa and company have plenty of tricks up their collective sleeve.

Matt Costa

Matt Costa has produced another thoughtful and highly crafted album. Different than past albums, this one seems to have more of a soft 70s vibe. Matt Costa fans won't be disappointed.

This is Basically Ecstasy

From the whimsical tunes of Songs We Sing to the soft punk melodies of Mobile Chateau, everyone knows this is a man with ambition. Matt Costa (the album, not person omg hahaha!!) is the same. Some tracks will have you feeling like youre on cocaine, others will make you feel like you are sitting down with your kids havin a good time.

Possibly one of the greatest written pieces of music of our generation. Matt Costa is one of those people who will be listened to for generations but will be far more popular with future generations than he ever was with ours. We should consider ourselves lucky to live in a time where we can buy his music as it comes out and see his shows. I saw him live before I ever bought any of his music and it was one of the most inspiring and moving performances I had ever been a part of. I paid $15 to see him at House of Blues Dallas ($15!?). To this day, that is the best $15 I've ever spent. Just buy this record. It's only like 33 minutes but it's fantastic. Then do what everyone else does and buy his other records to get your fix. This guy is fantastic and after meeting and chatting with him in person I can tell you that he is about as legit as it gets. Do yourself a solid and support this guy. Don't do it just to support a "struggling musician", do it because it will make your life better and will expand your experience of what music is currently out there (while helping a musician who more than deserves to be paid for his art). That is all. I hope you enjoy this record and spread the love the same way every other person who buys this record does. Cheers!

California's Matt Costa is a gifted singer/songwriter whose melodic, tuneful songs combine his love of '60s folk, '70s pop, and '80s college rock. Born in Huntington Beach, California in 1982, Costa received his first guitar at age 12. While he was always interested in music, even playing in a band in high school, Costa's first love was skateboarding. His dreams of going pro came crashing to an end, however, when he seriously injured his leg in a skateboarding accident at age 18. During his year-and-a-half-long...
