Album Review

A mixed bag that has more strengths than weaknesses, Telecommunication demonstrates Azymuth's ability to occasionally get into trouble when resorting to hi-tech gimmickry for its own sake, but also illustrates how rewarding the Brazilian trio can be. With its vocoder-ish hijinks, the funk-influenced "May I Have This Dance" is a dated and corny bit of silliness unworthy of Azymuth. But there's also much to admire on this CD, including the haunting "The House I Lived In," the sensuous "Country Road," and the sentimental "Last Summer in Rio." Though keyboardist/pianist José Roberto Bertrami and bassist/guitarist Alex Malheiros do not always stretch out enough, the results are quite appealing when they do.

Best Song on the album....

Last Summer In Rio. That one track alone gets 5* I've been waiting for ITunes to put the song up but it isn't worth buying the entire album for.

favorite song for over 20 years

I've loved this album since 1982, when a friend next door bought it and we would sit on his veranda drinking cocktails while listening to it. WE called it our "cocktail music." It is also great to listen to on a starry night at a beach! I finally figured out, after listening to it over one thousand times, often back to back, that Country Road is a song that IS me! Everyone should know their song - and this one's mine. Thanks, Azymuth, for this most lovely song that speaks for my soul!

An old school favorite!

LOVED this album when I was cutting my teeth on jazz / fusion back in the 80's. I had it on cassette but lost it many years back. Talk about relaxing... Last Summer in Rio is the epitome of cool fusion that is timeless. I bought the album soley on the merit of this one song and it is a must buy. Wish I could have gotten the chance to see them live.

Brazilian electrified trio Azymuth called their music samba doido, which means "crazy samba." The actual sounds, though, were not so crazy: the intelligent, high-voltage blend of Brazilian rhythms, jazz, and funk with occasional acoustic episodes gained a sizable following in the 1980s. The members of the group included José Roberto Bertrami (born February 21, 1946, in Tatui; died July 8, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro) on acoustic piano...
