iTunes Review

Beset by attacks on his character — including the revelation of his past history as a correctional officer, and a slew of defamation stunts launched by 50 Cent — Rick Ross was in danger of losing all credibility. But his detractors ire has given him focus, and Deeper Than Rap embraces a kind of sleek, low-key funk and proves to be his most consistent effort to date. Replete with wah guitar, rim cracks and rotund bass, “Magnificent,” “Yacht Club,” “Rich Off Cocaine” and “Gunplay” echo the live instrumentation of the Roots and funk-laden authority of Scarface. Of course, there are a couple songs that delve into signature Miami glitz: “Lay Back” might be a tad too saccharine, but “All I Really Want” is the ideal futuristic club jam. Ross uses most of his lyrics to reassure listeners that his public relations problems have not stopped him from living the high life, but when he decides to vent his rage in “Valley of Death,” the results are downright venomous. With Deeper Than Rap, Ross is once again rhyming with purpose, the fire in his belly stoked by controversy that could have paralyzed a lesser rapper.

Rick Ross - Deeper than Rap 1. Mafia Music - This track is alright but its not good enough to be the first single. 6/10 2. Maybach Music 2 - This is the best track on the album. Kanyes verse is good and he doesnt use the autotune. Pain comes in with an amazing hook. Ross's and Waynes verses are above average. This should've been the forst single. 10/10 3. Magnificent - Pretty good single. John Legend contributes an above average hook and Ross's rap is on point. 9/10 4. Yatch Club - I liked the reggae sounding hook. Not feelin the rap by Ross. Ultimately it is an average song. 6/10 5. Usual Suspects - Great song. Ross's verse is great compared to his other songs. Nas obviously steals the show with his verse. The hook is surprisingly good. 8/10 6. All I Really Want - The Dream has a good hook. The production is very refreshing in this song. Ross's verses are average. This is a clubby type of song. 7/10 7. Rich Of Cocaine - This is a decent song, but it is not a good single becasue of its name. Avery storm has a great hook and Ross's verses are good. 8/10 8. Lay Back - Great production. Robin Thicke wasnt a good choice on this song. It would've been a hit if he had someone like Pleasure P on this track. The rapping is Fair. 7/10 9. Murder Miami - Great verses from Ross. Foxy wasn't a good choice on this track. The production is grimy strret type, but it fits in very well with the track. 6/10 10. Gunplay - Great production, good lyrics. The feature wasnt very good though. This song could've been great if the feature was better. 5/10 11. Bossy Lady - Weird production. Having Ne-Yo on a track is a good idea, but he should've made a better track. the verses are alright but Ne-Yo doesn't have a good hook. I expected better from this collaboration. 7/10 12. Face - Banging Production by Drummer Boy. This is a good club anthem. The hook can get a bit repetitive at times. trina does surprisingly well on this track. 7/10 13. Valley Of Death - Nice sample for the production. This is one of my favourite tracks on the album. Ross's verses are excellent. His flow on this track is the best on this album.9/10 14. In Cold Blood - This is a 50 Cent diss. I don't like the production on this track. Ross's rap is good at some parts and gets worse at other times. 6/10 Overall, this album is not as good as i expected. Ross didn't use his feature to his advantage. The tracks I reccomend are, Maybach Music 2, Magnificent, Usual Suspects, Rich Off Cocoaine and Valley Of Death. This album is only a little bit better than trilla.

Tattooed with pictures of AK-47s, Miami's six-foot, 300-pound rap figure known as Rick Ross embraced his city's reputation for drug trafficking on his debut single, "Hustlin'," in 2006. While Atlanta and Houston artists were establishing their cities as Southern strongholds, Ross aimed at putting Miami back in rap's national spotlight. Ross, real name William Roberts, grew up in Carol City, Florida, an impoverished northern suburb of Miami. Influenced by artists like Luther Campbell and the Notorious...
