iTunes Review

Mayer Hawthorne (born Andrew Mayer Cohen) is a 30-year-old white musician with a deep appreciation of Smokey Robinson, Eddie Kendricks, and the complete works of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Hawthorne isn’t the only contemporary musician whose aim is to revive the textures and production techniques of mid-to-late period Motown. Just last year Raphael Saadiq released The Way I See It, an album with similar intentions as A Strange Arrangement. The difference is that Saadiq is a great singer and a passable arranger, while Hawthorne is a passable singer and a great arranger. He has learned to use his voice to his advantage, and it blends effortlessly into the dreamy chords of “A Strange Arrangement,” “Green Eyed Love,” and “Make Her Mine.” Hawthorne comes off slightly stiff on the uptempo numbers, but he has a knack for slow jams, and “Shiny & New” and “I Wish It Would Rain” are nothing short of sublime. But just like those old Motown albums, one single stands above all the rest — the groovy and graceful “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out.”

Bounds of miracles!

I bought this album because I heard that Stones Throw was destroying the world when this LP dropped. Luckily, I am still alive and not dead! After hearing this album, my biceps grew 1000x bigger, and my mojo grew over 9000x stronger. I thought to myself, "how could this be?" What I didn't realize was that this funky white boy's music was magical. The following day, I copped a 2021 Hybrid Ferrari and drove 1,000,000 mph down highway 101 where I saw a strip club. I stepped on the brakes, and the car instantly stopped. I went inside and came out with two women of whom will bear my children. Thanks Mayer aka Haircut and Stones Throw for keeping it real!

Great music. Great purchase.

Mayer Hawthorne makes music you wouldn't expect based on appearances... Not to be viewed as an imitation, but rather more of an homage to 60s/70s soul, A Strange Arrangement is a great listen. Hip-hop heads can appreciate the drums, and the fact that their favorite rappers will probably soon be co-signing this young talent. Soul-heads will appreciate the effort and love for Motown that Mayer displays with his freshman effort. Props to Stones Throw for continuing to sign great talent. For fans of: Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Raphael Saadiq, Ghostface, new takes on classic sounds. Mayer Hawthorne's other groups (hip-hop) -- Now On and Athletic Mic League

My Goodness

Why can't there be more artists like Mr. Hawthorne these days? This album sounds like it's straight fromt the 60's which is a GREAT thing. There is actual song writing, about real things, not "birthday sex" and stupid crap like that. Again, if there were only more artists like this guy these days, *sigh*.

A practitioner of his own variety of playful but sincere blue-eyed soul, Mayer Hawthorne is the stage name of eclectic DJ/producer Andrew Cohen. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a onetime member of the rap groups Athletic Mic League and Now On, Cohen began recording soul-steeped material as something of a joke. He initially didn't plan to have it reach beyond his circle of friends and family. But Hawthorne, the pseudonym Cohen used for the songs, eventually took on a life of its own. When...
