Album Review

Barenaked Ladies are a little less interested in the quirky and comic on their second album, perhaps recognizing that They Might Be Giants have that niche covered. Instead, though, they are showing their sensitive folk-pop roots, which makes them winning, if a little wet. (XTC, anyone?) But one thing they aren't is "alternative," a matter dealt with in the chorus of the song "Alternative Girlfriend," when they sing, "There's nothing left that won't cross over." Well put, and present company included.

Only 4 stars, uggg

Not their best, probably on their lower side, but it's still BNL which makes it AWESOME! Jane- Just as good as on Rock Spectacle, a great song--5/5 Intermittently- Probably their best or 2nd best on the album (depends where you put Life, In a Nutshell)--5/5 These Apples-A great song, but I like the version on Rock Spectacle more, just buy the other version. For this version--3.5/5 You Will Be Waiting- A nice, slower song. Caring, sweet, I like it--4/5 A- This song has a great beat and nice writing--5/5 Everything Old Is New Again- A lot like You Will Be Waiting-- 4/5 Alternative Girlfriend- On their Greatest Hits album for a reason! Buy this song--5/5 Am I the Only One- Didn't like this one as much. Too slow--3/5 Little Tiny Song- No--1/5 Life, In a Nutshell- A nice, different beat from the version on Rock Spectacle. They are so different, I love both versions of this song. If you already have the Rock Spectacle Version, buy this one anyway, it's different enough that you won't know. BUY THIS SONG!--5/5 The Wrong Man Was Convicted- A nice song, a better version of "Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel"--4/5 Great Provider- Slower than I like--3/5 Top 3 Life, In A Nutshell Intermittently Jane Bottom 3 Little Tiny Song Am I the Only One Great Provider Recomendation- Buy this whole album, it's great.

By combining humor with an eclectic mix of folk and pop/rock, the Barenaked Ladies enjoyed considerable popularity in their native Canada before rising to international status with 1998's "One Week." Vocalists Ed Robertson and Steve Page launched the band in the late '80s as an acoustic act, traveling to different college campuses and playing warm-up gigs for comedy troupes.
