iTunes Review

Mayday Parade steps up its game with an eponymous third studio album that surpasses its critically acclaimed debut LP, A Lesson in Romantics. Where the band’s sophomore album featured outside songwriters, this time it insisted on crafting its own tunes and keeping the overall sound organic and live. “Oh Well, Oh Well” opens as lonely piano notes and strings play under Derek Sanders’ heartbroken inflections; then a hi-hat countoff detonates the song into a snarling, rocking emo epic. “No Heroes Allowed” follows, boasting one of the album’s best guitar solos and dynamically doubled vocals. Although guitarist/backing vocalist Jason Lancaster left the band for personal reasons following its first album, vestiges of his guitar and singing style haunt the standout power ballad “When You See My Friends.” The heartfelt “Happy Endings Are Stories That Haven't Ended Yet” closes with old-school emo balladry. Intimate acoustic versions of “When You See My Friends” and “Oh Well, Oh Well” are bonus tracks.

A Return to Form

Team Mayday Parade, team Go Radio. I DON'T CARE.
I'll admit, I didn't like MP's release Anywhere But Here as much as A Lesson In Romantics. BUT that doesn't mean it was bad.
It was good. Just not the same Mayday Parade we all loved so much.
People said they'd never be as good without Jason.
Well.... I don't know if that's completely true anymore.
This album is almost like a return to A Lesson In Romantics. Not QUITE the same, but it's definitely a breath of fresh air.
I am pleasantly surprised.
If life was perfect, Jason would still be in the band. Oh well, oh well. This album is still amazing.
So, Mayday Parade, thank you for making me smile.

And as far as the ongoing battle between Mayday and Go Radio, can everyone just shut up? It's ALL good music! So enjoy it all! :D

- Austin

There are three bands I will never forgive for kicking their singer out:

Chiodos booting Craig Owens, Escape the Fate booting Ronnie Radke, and finally, the infamous Mayday Parade Jason Lancaster story. That being said, Mayday Parade is a significant upgrade from the horrible Anywhere But Here; Derek is finally learning how to write good music without Jason. I enjoy every song on the record, and lyrically, it's Derek's best. But, every time you listen to this record, think to yourself how this record COULD HAVE been if they still had Jason. I perrsonally don't think Mayday Parade will EVER top their debut A Lesson in Romantics (nor will Go Radio for that matter) but this is still a great CD and if you like Mayday Parade you'll like this album.

I've listened to the PREVIEW

I've listened to the preview of the first 2 songs. Already a ton better than their last full length. Anyone else notice the second song says Hereos? =D
