Album Review

In 1979 Max Roach founded M'Boom, a group consisting of eight percussionists. Their debut recording (which has been reissued on this Columbia CD) is far from being a monotonous drum battle. In fact, through the utilization of a wide range of instruments that include chimes, timbales, marimba, vibes, xylophone, tympani, various bells and steel drums, there are quite a lot of melodies to be heard during these nine performances (which are all group originals other than Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy"). This is a particularly colorful set that is easily recommended not only to jazz and percussion fans but to followers of World music.

Customer Reviews

I've been waiting for this album to be on CD (or iTunes, as it happens) for YEARS! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Two thumbs up. Five stars. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. If you've never heard this material, you're in for a treat. (I just previewed my review and it is calling me "Tough Cookies Joe." What the heck is THAT? Whatever. This is a great package of tunes.)

Great album, but needs to be completed by iTS

I have a cassette tape from a scratchy old LP of this album in the 1980's. I too have been waiting a long time for this reissue. The 1994 release went out of print almost before it hit the shelves. M'Boom is a jazz percussion classic by any standard! One note about the 'partial album' offered here: the tracks are out of sequence. The CD version includes these tracks: 1. Onomatopoeia 2. Twinkle Toes 3. Caravanserai 4. January V 5. The glorious Monster 6. Rumble in the Jungle 7. Morning / Midday 8. Epistrophy 9. Kujichaglia I surely would love to see M'Boom completed at iTS & given iTunes Plus treatment. Apple, please do what you can! Copies of this CD are in tight supply through eBay, selling for up to $60 new or $40 used.

A Perfect Companion

i'm a drummer. and i haven't been this impressed with a collaboration of percussionists since Mickey Hart's Diga Rhythm Band, which is a perfect match to go with this album. buy this. then get Diga Rhythm Band. definitly required listening for ALL percussionists.

In a profession star-crossed by early deaths -- especially the bebop division -- Max Roach was long a shining survivor, one of the last giants from the birth of bebop. He and Kenny Clarke instigated a revolution in jazz drumming that persisted for decades; instead of the swing approach of spelling out the pulse with the bass drum, Roach shifted the emphasis to the ride cymbal. The result was a lighter, far more flexible texture, giving drummers more freedom to explore the possibilities of their drum...
