iTunes Editors’ Notes

After recording his bleak end-of-the-60s masterpiece, Wolfking of L.A., Papa John Phillips started work on a second solo effort that never saw the light of day. Jack of Diamonds finally collects material intended for that album along with various bonus tracks, including a pair of songs by the Mamas and Papas. Only two cuts on Diamonds have previously been released: “Last of the Unnatural Acts” and “First and Last Thing You Do” from the soundtrack to Robert Altman’s Brewster McCloud. Phillips expands upon and drifts away from Wolfking’s country-rock sound — here he incorporates R&B and jazz touches. (Both Wolfking and Diamonds feature the extraordinary playing of top L.A. session players, and jazzmen like Joe Sample and Wilton Felder contribute to the funky sound.) More than anything else, “Black Broadway” brings to mind Sly’s There’s a Riot Goin’ On, while “Mister Blue” recalls Lou Reed’s Coney Island Baby. Phillips is a truly amazing wordsmith; the early 1970s instrumental stylings may not startle you, but his lyrics might. The man’s finely detailed imagery is often loopy and always inspired.

John Phillips may easily be called one of the best pop songwriters of the later 20th century. He honed his songwriting and arranging skills with singing groups that gained a modicum of success. But his crowning musical achievement was the work he did with his '60s group the Mamas and the Papas. Their popularity helped to stem the tide of the "British Invasion" of the 1960s, and bring attention back to American popular music. After a stunningly successful three-year run, the band collapsed under the...
