iTunes Review

After introducing a trio sound that fan Warren Zevon likened to Bartok, PJ Harvey moved on to up the ante with producer Steve Albini. Bringing the use of soft-loud dynamics to a new, er, levels, Albini showcased the Harvey band's rumble in a way that made even their great debut, Dry, sound a little tame. Filled with sexual and social power and loathing, the record also put across a wicked sense of humor, as when a male band member howls a "Lick my legs, I'm on fire" mantra at the end of the title track or the outfit turns Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" into a sonic carnival ride. The blend was not unlike that of Polly Jean Harvey's hero Captain Beefheart, who was apparently pleased: The two have been confidantes for years.

Maybe the best album ever

This album is a monster of rock. Ms. Harvey has since become more polished but (aside from the four track demo before this album) she has never rocked harder, and unfortunately never will. If you need to get amped listen to "50ft Queenie", "Yuri G" and "Man Size". In contrast "Missed" is a genuine blues style ballad, and the cover of "Highway 61 Revisited" is genious and, in my opinion, far surpasses the original in....originality. So you know where my opinion comes from, I listen to indie, post/proto punk, punk, classic rock (harder) and jazz. My favorite album (really the best album ever) is the Stones "Let it Bleed", followed by the Pixies "Surfer Rosa". This is album is definitely on my desert island top 10 list.

probably one of the greatest angst ridden alternative albums

i had downloaded many of pj's albums in the past, so when i came to check this one out i felt prepared...i had heard many angst-ridden artists so i wasn't expecting anything new (sleater-kinney, alanis, fiona apple) but when i downloaded my first four songs (rid of me, legs, yuri-g, and snake) i was completely and utterly blown away. her groans and yelps and distorted violins and guitars all fuse together to form a verbally articulate (and i say this politely) bi**h who is out to get revenge, sexual pleasure, and social power.

"I'm Gonna Twist Your Head Off, See?"

Many artists promise that they're going to rip your head off with their newest release, yet few ever deliver. Polly delivered in spades with this album. "Rid Of Me" was my introduction to PJ Harvey. While the low volume of this CD should really be brought up for modern equipment, it still stands miles of its competition from that time and still stands above many of the current crop. Vintage Polly...grab this!

During the alternative rock explosion, several female singer/songwriters rose to prominence, but few have proved as distinctive or as widely praised as Polly Jean Harvey. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, love, and religion with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. At the outset, she led the trio PJ Harvey, which delivered her stark songs with bruisingly powerful,...
