Album Review

With a title that references the band's love of studio work, Slightly Stoopid's Meanwhile...Back at the Lab is a love letter to jamming on tape, one that often flirts with dub techniques, and sounds "wet" the whole way through. Check the highlight, "This Version," for a reverb-heavy creep across the mixing console, or jump to "Come Around," which kicks open the door with a tech sound before filling the room with some dank, dubby bass. The positive vibrations on "Life Rolls On" are pushed right to the front of the speakers with horns coming through loud and clear, and thankfully, this loose tribute to recording techniques doesn't forget it's the song that matters, as the writing remains solid and often sweet. Longtime fans will dig how early song "The Prophet" gets a new recording here, and yes, that's the reggae-loving and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Angela Hunte ("Empire State of Mind") lending a hand on "One Bright Day."

Stoopid Rolls On

How fitting is it that my favorite band picks 420 to announce a new album and put out a new song?! So far I have only heard “Life Rolls On” but if that is a preview of what is coming on June 30, we’re in for another Stoopid classic. Kyle kills the vocals on this song and I am digging the little horn hook. It’s just a feel good summer time anthem….Right in time, the weather is just starting to get nice! Happy 420, can’t wait for the other tracks and see what these guys have put together from the “lab”.

Slightly Stoopid is the best!

I love the new album. This is by far my favorite stoopid album since closer to the sun. My favorite jams are Guns in Paradise, Rolling Stone, Come Around and Time Won't Wait. Good work gents

Slighty loving it

Love Stoopid. Thanks for keeping the music real!!!!!!

Slightly Stoopid's Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald were signed to Sublime mastermind Brad Nowell's Skunk imprint while still in high school, and did two albums for the label, Slightly Stoopid in 1996 and Longest Barrel Ride two years later. While the sound back then was SoCal skatepunk influenced by thrash elements and copious amounts of weed, Doughty and McDonald's playing and singing had matured considerably by 2001 and Live & Direct: Acoustic Roots. The duo was later rounded by drummer Ryan Moran...
