Editors’ Notes

Along with Tracy Chapman and the Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge spearheaded a fresh wave of female singer/songwriters in the late 1980s. Her raw-throated vocals and confessional songwriting set her apart from the pack, and Melissa’s 1988 self-titled debut album still packs a considerable wallop — from first track to last, she pours out her innermost torments as if her very sanity were at stake. Etheridge seems on the verge of shredding her vocal chords on torrid testimonies like “Bring Me Some Water” and “Similar Features.” More modulated tunes like “The Late September Dogs” prove that she can hold back and still make her point. Her obsession with romantic break-ups and recriminations narrows the range of the album, but few artists can wear their scars of romantic combat as proudly as she can — her survivor’s strength transforms tracks like “Chrome Plated Heart” into anthems of passion. For all the sorrow and rage in her performances, Etheridge keeps her dignity and seems ennobled by her suffering. Melissa Etheridge became the foundation for an impressive career; it remains her most enduring work.

Customer Reviews

Melissa Etheridge is among some of the most strongest female rock stars that have ever walked this earth. Every song she does affects people, in a good way. Most people sing about problems that you hear from the news or a friend, but she writes about stuff that everyone has experienced in their own way. Even though i've only just discovered her, i feel like i've grown up with her. You go, Melissa!! Peace out.

Bring ME Some Water

Incredible! Sexy, urgent, pushing, wanting, aching, owning, taking.....It all comes together in this CD. If you don't own this one, yet, what are you waiting for? Play it when you need the "feel." We've all been where this CD takes us and Melissa writes the words for our emotions. Rock on!!!!

Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. But the road to stardom was not all smooth sailing for Etheridge as she debated behind the scenes whether or not to disclose to the public that she was gay early on in her career. Born May 29, 1961, in Leavenworth, Kansas, Etheridge first picked up the guitar at the age of eight and began penning her own songs...
