Klaus Waldeck - Musical genius at work

From a guy who got his start doing some of Vienna's most unique trip hop working with the likes of Kruder and Dorfmeister, Ballroom Stories is a real departure and a real treat. Instead of the moody downtempo vibe of his last release, "The Night Garden", Waldeck uses an interesting, almost peppy 20s/30s overall feel, but doesn't move too far away the beat. With his favorite guest artist Joy Malcolm supplying the vocals, "Make My Day" is a vibrant almost happy track, although the inclusion of it in a BMW ad puts me off a bit. Taking inspriration (along with samples) from the likes of Porgy and Bess and Bizet's "Carmen", the rest of the disc has a classical feel, but maintains it's truly modern vibe. This release is certainly in my top 5 of the year, and definatlely the most unique sounding CD of my picks. It will be interesting to see what Klaus Waldeck does next...

made my day : check.

take the best elements of blues, jazz, trip-hop, and dance, roll it all up into one and you get Waldeck. A beautiful album that makes you want to dance from the beginning and then lets you cool down with a smooth finish. If I had to take just one song, it would be the first: "Make My Day"... because it definitely does.

No. 1

This album just blows me away. Best thing I ever bought in my life.

Waldeck's work is similar earthy downtempo, though many of his productions reflect the recruitment of vocalists, similar to Massive Attack. After contributing a track to the Spray compilation The Eclectic Sound of Vienna, Waldeck released his debut full-length Balance of the Force in 1999. Along with an American distribution deal through E-Magine,...
