iTunes Review

Deerhunter’s dark, dreamy indie rock reached its crest on their fifth album, Halcyon Digest. Marrying punk grit with the romantic lilt of doo-wop ballads and early '60s pop, the band created a kind of modern noir—seductive and mysterious but alluringly rough around the edges. Songs like “Revival” and “Memory Boy” ring out like a basement-dwelling version of The Byrds; “Basement Scene” is their “La Bamba”—a fascinating take on the past by one of the present’s most unusual indie rock bands.

One of The Best of The Year

Deerhunter manage to put out another great album and in my opinion probably their best and most diverse. Tracks like 'Earthquake' and 'Sailing' have a great ambient feel, while 'Fountain Stairs and 'Coronado' sound like lost David Bowie B-sides. All of the songs are really amazing and Bradford Cox establishes just how great of a songwriter and composer he is. Guitarist Lockett Pundt penned and sings 'Desire Lines' which is the standout (and maybe the best) track on the album and shows that Bradford isn't the only one with all the talent. Halcyon Digest is flat out awesome from a lyrical and musical standpoint and it maketh me very happy.

This album is beautiful. This album is album of the year. This album is Deerhunter's best. End of discussion.

Tough competition for AOTY 2010

In a year when I thought I was ready to crown either the Arcade Fire or the National with album of the year, this absolutely brilliant gem of an album comes out of nowhere. I had no idea this was even coming out today. I nabbed it, having liked the band's previous efforts, and this is by far their best and most easily accessible album. A great listen, front to back.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Deerhunter are an experimental noise rock band from Atlanta, fronted by the compellingly odd singer Bradford Cox. Cox's vocal style blends vocal experimentation along the lines of Meredith Monk or Yoko Ono with a more direct and punky howl inspired by the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Cox is also a striking on-stage presence: the exceedingly skinny 6'4" lead singer has Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of the connective tissue that gives him abnormally long and spindly limbs. (The late Joey Ramone was...
