iTunes Review

One of those early Westside groups that never really blew up nationally, despite some great wordplay and truly outstanding production, Above the Law came together in 1989, hailing from South Central Los Angeles and affiliated with N.W.A. This debut dropped the following year, with production overseen by Dr. Dre, who contributes a myriad of soulful loops and complex drum programming that would sound right at home on 100 Miles and Runnin' or No One Can Do It Better. Though lyrically they aren't as ultra-violent as their Compton cousins, they've still got the requisite gangsta jams like "Murder Rap," "Menace to Society," and "Another Execution." They are also purveyors of the baller/hustler mentality, exemplified on the hypnotic groove of "Ballin'," and team up with N.W.A and The D.O.C. on the posse-cut closer "The Last Song." The group (Cold 187um, KMG, DJ Total K-Oss, and Go Mack) would continue recording on and off for 15 years, but Livin' Like Hustlers is their defining moment, a slept-on Cali rap milestone and the perfect soundtrack to a sunny ride in a low-rider Impala.

Customer Reviews

okay, first off dont be fooled by the other reviews; the one dude said he didnt know the album that well so he unfairly gave it three stars. the other dude said ACCORDING to the source, it is a top 100 album. which it is, but he still only gave it 4 stars. to set the record straight, this is a str8 up 5 star classic by Above The Law. Dr. Dre and Laylaw handle production while Cold187um, Go Mack and KMG lay down some smooth west coast gangsta lyrics over teh superb beats. You might know the first song, "Murder Rap," from the GTA San Andreas soundtrack. It is a ill song and a great way to start off the album. However it is not even one of the top 3 best songs on the album, those being "The Last Song" with NWA (minus Ice Cube), "Ballin," and "Livin Like Hustlers." Bottom line, get this album, Above The Law is dope.

Part of the post-N.W.A explosion of California gangsta rap, Above the Law came out of the eastern Los Angeles suburb of Pomona; leader Cold 187um, aka Big Hutch (born Gregory Hutchinson), was joined by KMG the Illustrator (born Kevin Dulley), Go Mack (born Arthur Goodman), and DJ Total K-Oss (born Anthony Stewart). Mixing '70s vintage funk and soul samples with live instrumentation (Hutchinson had studied jazz while in school), the group signed with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records and issued its debut...
