iTunes Review

Matthews and company had been test-driving the songs "If Only," "Gaucho," "Sweet" and standout ballad "Mercy" live in concerts, prior to tracking them for Away From The World. Aside from second song “Belly Belly Nice” recalling the propulsive funk of “Ants Marching,” “Broken Things” opens to reveal that this is hardly a 1990s throwback album or nostalgic trip. The slow burning soul groove of “If Only” stands out like a Memphis barbecue in Virginia.

What else can I say? It's the Dave Matthews Band. You know you're not gonna be disappointed when you buy one of their records. And their latest release "Away from the World" is certainly no exception. With the reintroduction of Steve Lillywhite (the band's producer for their first three albums), it's no surprise that these new songs are mostly reminiscent of DMB's earlier material. "Broken Things", "Belly Belly Nice", and "Mercy" stand out as the most memorable tracks, but every other song on here is worth listening to as well. Overall, this is a solid effort from the group, and it just goes to show they aren't slowing down anytime soon. Granted, it's not their best work, and it usually just sticks to the same themes that we've heard before, but if you love great bluesy rock music and Dave's gentle, grainy voice, "Away from the World" is a worthwhile purchase.

BORING and WEAK...Very Disappointed

Ok, i've been a DMB fan from their inception and have EVERY album and live trax out there......I even have their Firedancer logo tattooed on my stinking right arm (and i've been to Over 20 DMB Concerts over the years).....but I have to say, since Leroi's passing, this band has not been the same and "Big Whiskey" was only just OK. They have gone WAY DOWNHILL.

This new album, in my opinion is WORSE!!! Dave has gone WAY TOO SOFT with his voice/vocals, the melodies are NOT the way I would have expected a Lillywhite Produced album would be (in other words, nothing like previous DMB/Lillywhite albums). The melodies have very little Jam, Rock feel to them, and I couldn't pick out a single song that I would want to listen to over and over like previous's just plain BORING this album is!!! Previous records by DMB were explosive and made you want to jam out in the drivers seat going down the highway....this just BORING!!!!

No real "DMB Feel" to this record and I, as a huge fan for many years, am VERY disappointed. I think its time for them to stop and Dave can focus on his side Winemaking project "Dreaming tree wines".......

I think other real DMB fans will agree with me and may possibly be DONE with this band, and to all you "Teenie Boppers" out there who think this record
is the best yet, you are NUTS.....I invite you to start with "Remember Two Things" and listen forward, becasue this album does NOT compare.

So Long DMB...your haydays are OVER

Back to Lillywhite. FINALLY! This album is an extension of Some Devil, so if you like that one you will definitely like this one. The songs are well produced, well written, and executed flawlessly!I still like the older Before These Crowded Streets style a bit more, a bit more raw and emotional than the newer albums. I think that's why so many people love their live albums and the Lillywhite Sessions so much.

Broken Things, Belly Belly Nice, Rooftop and Drunken Soldifer are my favorites thus far, but hey - this came out streaming about a week ago and I haven't listened to it THAT much yet but I'm sure it will make it into the rotation in my car.

Formed: 1991 in Charlottesville, VA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth...
