EDITORS’ NOTES

A deeply felt collection of early-’70s soul, What’s Going On is a current-events chronicle that could get by on its burbling groove alone. The title track, “What’s Happening Brother,” and “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” are laden collages of supple post-funk rhythms and despairing urban mood that barely even need words to get their message across. Yet the lyrics match the music: The “picket lines and picket signs,” “trigger-happy policing,” poison wind, collapsing ghettos, and boys sent off to die are just a few of the details in these timeless portraits.

Gaye’s soul drenched masterpiece

Besides obvious killer hits What’s Going On & Mercy Me, the true apex predator R&B mind blower on the LP is Inner City Blues. The playing, production, & vocal stylings hit the soul power trifecta. Aspiring funk bassists should learn and get Inner City Blues’ bassline ingrained into their DNA if they ever expect to take it to the next phase. Dig how ICB starts in one place, tells a story and takes you on a journey with rest stops, side excursions, etc. Unwind yr mind and rethread your head ‘cause this is the jam yr gonna dig for days and days.

Masterpiece

A masterpiece filled with lyrics that are, unfortunately, as true today and apply to today's society as back then.
