Editors’ Notes

The sassy, catchy “Mercy” and the aching “Syrup & Honey” show traces of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, but Duffy sounds most like herself on “Delayed Devotion,” a song that forgoes nostalgia and delivers instead a very sharp and well-written contemporary pop song. Elsewhere, spacious, string-laden songs like “Distant Dreamer” and “Rockferry” owe much to producer Bernard Butler’s former band Suede.

This album is great for relaxing or just to calm you down. The overall sound is very 60's motown Here's what I think of each song, I bought this in stores about a week ago, and have been listening to it ever since. Rockferry- 10/10 I love the chorus, and though I hate to compare her to Amy Whinehouse, this is like a toned down version of her Warwick Avenue- 10/10 This is already rivaling the success of Mercy in the UK, sure to be a hit Serious- 9/10 very 60's, not the best track but still a great song Stepping Stone- 8/10 good track, I like the message but it isn't my favorite Syrup & Honey- 9/10 slower, but still a good song Hanging On Too Long- 7/10 this song just is probably my least favorite song, but it's definitely not bad Mercy- 10/10 this song is so amazing, and is a smash hit, or will be a smash hit in most countries. It is very catchy and extremely hard to get out of your head Delayed Devotion- 9/10 this song is not the best but I like the tune and the beat I'm Scared- 10/10 I like this song because it has a very nice meaning, and I like the tune Distant Dreamer- 9/10 this song in my opinion has probably the best lyrics on the entire album Overall the lyrics are powerful, the vocals are pure, and can't wait for more Songs to Download: Rockferry Warwick Avenue Mercy I'm Scared Distant Dreamer Syrup & Honey Delayed Devotion Overall I give the album 9.5/10

I challenge anybody to listen to this album and not be drawn into its raw, emotional power. Duffy's lyrics and voice are the stuff of eternal longing and broken hearts. From the neo-soul vibe of "Mercy" to the heart-wrenching purity of "Warwick Avenue" this collection of self-penned songs are a nod to the great female artists of the sixties (Dusty, Springfield, Karen Dalton) but without ever slipping into pastiche. A new soul diva for the 21st Century; move over Amy, all hail the Duffster, she's here to stay.

freakiously amazing!!

Overall, this is a wonderful album! I believe I (and others) have waited too long, but it's here now. lol. This is the type of album I would put on when I come home from work or when all the kids are sleep and I just want to free my mind of all the things that surround me, this would the album to listen to. Favorite Tracks (Not in Order) 5. Syrup & Honey - Just smooth and relaxing. The lyrics to the song will take you back to any ex-girlfriend (or ex-boyfriend for the ladies) you had in the past and all you wanted to do was spend time with them. 6. Hanging On Too Long - Self explanatory. This is also smooth too. 11. Save It for Your Prayers - Her voice and the piano alone is just sensational! You must buy the album to enjoy the song in full. 4. Stepping Stone - Deep with soul. If you are upset with that special person, this will make you calm down and tell them to get the hell on because you will never be their "Stepping Stone." 7. Mercy - Of course, this song is a hit! It's catchy and fun! You hear instruments, REAL instruments; drums, violin, guitar, etc. It is simply a hit. 9. I'm Scared - I was kind of unsure about this song because of the first minute of it, but when she starts singing "I'm scared...," I was hooked! I would tell anyone, if you like music that has soul, some meaning, some emotion, or some relaxation, this is the album to get! Wonderful Work Duffy!!!

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Emerging during the same boom of retro U.K.-based singers that launched Amy Winehouse, Duffy distinguished herself with a melodic, vintage voice that brought to mind such '60s artists as Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Born in the small coastal town of Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, Wales, Amy Ann Duffy began singing at an early age. With a record collection limited to her parents' classic LPs, though, she had few influences to draw from. Her father's VHS tapes of the 1960s television...
