Album Review

Cyndi Lauper closed out her Epic Records contract with this holiday album, which consists mostly of original compositions. Lauper seeks the Christmas spirit in some snowless locales, giving a Cajun sound to "Early Christmas Morning" and an appropriately tropical feel to "Christmas Conga." She favors folkie arrangements and is heard playing dulcimer, recorder, and ukulele, among other instruments, which lend a homemade feel to the tracks. Merry Christmas...Have a Nice Life! is an unusual but ultimately winning collection, rendered with Lauper' s typical cockeyed conviction.

Favorite holiday album

This album is one of my all-time favorite holiday collections. Lauper's original songs range from fun and witty ("Minnie and Santa" and "Christmas Conga," which dares you not to dance along) to reverent and emotional "New Year's Baby" and "December Child"). Her take on some Christmas classics are gems, too. It's the best version ever of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (sorry Brenda Lee!). Love it!

New music... sounding like classics

Cyndi pretty much can pull of any genre of music, and this album is no exception. Original compositions, save Silent Night (here in a tender and simple arrangement and best known when Pampers used it as its holiday commercial theme a few years back), add an intoxicating, yet somehow familiar, twist on Christmas tunes. This is an excetional Christmas album: fun, tender, joyous, romantic,'s all here. Highly recommended.

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five-million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early '80s, which helped lead her not only to the top of the charts, but also to stardom. Throughout America, there were...
