iTunes Review

A Paul Westerberg solo album in all but name, All Shook Down does include contributions from the band’s three other members plus the participation of John Cale, Charley Drayton, Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers), and Concrete Blonde’s Johnette Napolitano. As a Replacements album, it’s the most restrained in the catalog. But as a mature piece of singer-songwriter pop, it’s an amazingly resilient piece of work, highlighted by three exquisite Westerberg ballads — “Sadly Beautiful,” “All Shook Down,” and “The Last” — and several other urgent sounding pop tunes in “Merry Go Round,” “Someone Take the Wheel,” “When It Began,” and “Happy Town.” Singer Paul Westerberg sounds suitably distressed throughout, reminding one of country legend Hank Williams Sr. at his emotive best. The 2008 reissue includes 11 bonus tracks, including seven Westerberg demos that are oddly self-conscious for demos, as he hides his performances behind a few cheap effect pedals. However, any chance to hear another attempt at “Sadly Beautiful” is worth pursuing, as are the personal takes on “When It Began,” “Attitude” and “Tiny Paper Plane,” a song that never made it to the final album.

Customer Reviews

Simply great.

I borrowed this from my brother and discovered music I had never heard before. One of those rare albums that changes the way you see the world. "Sadly Beautiful" is worth a million bucks.

If it's Westerberg's 1st solo album, it's his best!

Love the Mats, from beginning to end. This is a beautiful, somber album full of great songs. Some say it ain't real Mats, ok. If it's Westerberg's 1st solo album, it's his best!

Stands the test of time

I had listened to this in a long time and it really stands the test of time. One of my 10 favorites albums.

Formed: 1979 in Minneapolis, MN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

The Replacements initially formed in 1979, when Paul Westerberg joined a garage punk band formed by brothers Bob (guitar) and Tommy Stinson (bass) and drummer Chris Mars. Originally called the Impediments, the Minnesota residents changed their name to the Replacements after being banned from a local club for disorderly behavior. In their early days, they sounded quite similar to Hüsker Dü, the leaders of the Minneapolis punk scene. However, the Replacements were wilder and looser than the Hüskers...
