EDITORS’ NOTES

For The Awakening, Etheridge stepped back from the searing blues rock that made her a household name and opted instead for clean, acoustic, folksy guitars. This is a restrained affair, an intimate and deeply confessional album charting her recovery from cancer and her political disillusionment with the Iraq war. Here she is tender (“An Unexpected Rain”), spiritual (anti-war declaration “The Kingdom of Heaven”), and hopeful (“Open Your Mind”), while never losing her dry humor, as on “Threesome,” about the limits of a ménage à trois.

Great CD but iTunes Pre-Orders has issues

I've heard the whole CD by now and I agree with many of the reviews, it's very different from her past material lyrically and it's one of her best. The 2nd half of the CD is amazing and it and she deserves all the praise it gets.

iTunes - IT WOULD BE NICE IF, BY 6AM we could download a PRE ORDER!!! THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. I CAN BUY THE THING BUT CAN"T GET AT MY PRE-ORDER. This has been true since launch and should have been fixed ages ago. We get penalized for pre-ordering. How stupid.

Every song on this album is great from California which is a rocking pop song to an unexpected rain which is emotional. Map of the stars is a warning to anyone seeking fame. The kingdom of heaven should be listened to by everyone as well is open your mind overall great job Melissa!
