Album Review

The Spinanes had a particular acumen for deprived sanguine college rock that was as reclusive as their deprived and sanguine fanbase, although Imp Years proved the band was far more caustic than most people gave them credit for. Collecting the band's 1992 pre-Sub Pop 7" singles, this diminutive compilation crawls with abruptness and melancholy. "Messy S****y" is appropriately named but not unsuccessful, and "Halloween Candy" and "Hawaiian Baby" are quiet, insistent numbers which underline the early talent of Rebecca Gates' voice and her perpetual career-long taste for acoustic passive-aggressiveness.

$3.99 for One Song? Really? ABSOLUTELY.

"Hawaiian Baby" is the best song that this ridiculously overlooked band ever recorded, and for that reason, $3.99 is a small price to pay, even if you never listen to the other songs, which are actually not bad.

The Early Years

this ep collects some early singles from the spinanes. the sound is similar to their first major release 'manos', although it doesn't have the same level of maturity. there are a few throwaways, most specifically 'handful of hearts', but overall it's a strong release that complements 'manos' quite well. recommended.

So Sweet....

Taking the power trio format one stage further, they created a full-bodied rock sound with just two members, guitarist/singer Rebecca Gates and drummer Scott Plouf. They were also one of the first Sub Pop bands that did not subscribe to a grungy metallic sound, although they rocked pretty hard. Beyond these...
