"Enter Sandman’s” head-on, no-nonsense approach and fail-safe chorus ("Exit light, enter night") guaranteed Metallica the radio and MTV play that often eluded them in the past. Yet, it's the slower moments—the haunting ballad "Nothing Else Matters," the contemplative "The Unforgiven"—that really showcase Metallica's power to win over a massive mainstream audience.

My Schizophrenia

I couldn't decide when the album came out whether I liked it or not. I thought Justice was so killer (and everything before it) that it was just so different.

So, therein lies the identity crisis right? Both for me, but apparently for Metallica. As the itunes review states, Metallica was at a key crossroads in the music industry. Grunge had come and destroyed hair metal, but did it really threaten the darker thrash metal that had such a huge underground following? I mean Metallica was on the map in the mid 80's with a loyal fanbase. Sure, they didn't have the videos and fame and platinum records yet, but they were well known.

If I were locked in a room having never heard of Metallica and was introduced to the sounds of this album I would likely say that it was really, really good. But that wasn't the case, and I'm not sure it was fortunate or unfortunate that I had already been exposed to early Metallica. I used to listen to Justice at raging parties thinking to myself that it had to be some of the most brutal and time effective riffing and drum tracks ever recorded. Flemming Rasmussen really did a great production there, a masterpiece to thrash metal. While keeping the balls out rawness of progressive metal, Justice was also "smart". What I mean by that is that the album was an orchestra of sound and could have easily been written in another genre, like classical. That is why S&M worked well, and, being a musician, I thought of the concept of it before Metallica even decided to do it.

Enter "Sandman" and you basically have Metallica at a confessional. They knew the album would be different and they knew they would draw a ton of attention (they already had it and the world was waiting for this one- and Metallica knew it). They claimed that they didn't want to be sellouts, but the very nature of the statement airs of one getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

No offense to Metallica really. The album is genius, but it doesn't mean you have to like it- nor me. I too was caught with my hand in the cookie jar when I bought the album. Is it good? Yes, but the population that thought so accepted it in "circles". I'm trying to articulate that those who were already fans thought it was "good", but those who were being introduced to them for the first time on the radio thought it was really good, if that makes any sense.
