iTunes Editors’ Notes

Billy Joel has had a long, successful career by anyone's measure—but that's just half the story. Here, Joel gives his fans the alternate route. Songs from his days with The Lost Souls, The Hassles, and Attila are curiosities. B-sides, demos, and live versions of his solo work are more lasting. The Lost Souls' demos of "My Journey's End" and "Time and Time Again" are engaging. A heavily edited version of "Amplifier Fire (Part 1)" by Attila should make everyone glad Joel abandoned that project for Cold Spring Harbor. The demo of "Piano Man" is essential for every fan. "These Rhinestone Days," which became "I've Loved These Days," is thoughtful. The alternate version of "Only the Good Die Young" is revealing. The early live version of "Captain Jack" captures the young man on fire. "Elvis Presley Blvd." (the b-side of "Allentown") deserved to be on a proper album. Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and a live version of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" prove that Joel loved the music most of all. A demo of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" is unexpected. The demo of "Josephine" is an iTunes exclusive.

Customer Reviews

we need more songs to become available!

I want to get why should I worry as well as a lot of other people do, but it's way out of line to spend $40. just to get one song that we can't by on it's own. I've tried lots of other stores and music companies and even they don't sell this particular song as a single. Please do us all a favor, and remove the album only, and allow us to buy this song from itunes!

Oh, Billy!!

Despite the itunes 'album only blues' I have to say that this is THE compilation of Billy Joel that shows off not just his material, but material from one of his greatest influences, The Beatles! I wouldn't mind hearing a whole album of Billy doing Beatles covers. I love hearing his demos - early in his career especially. The concert footage serves to fulfill that 'jonesin' need to see him live. I hate when you can't buy the one or two songs that you want or need, but if you do spend the money for THIS you'll find that it's sooo worth it. From what I've heard him say, he can't understand why people are into him: I can't understand how some people are NOT into Billy Joel. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, Billy; for sharing your music all of these years. (^_^)

Okay, so WHY can't we buy why should I worry? That's not fair that I have to buy some cruddy karaoke artist that sounds nothing like Billy Joel! Billy Joel is a legend! Not some karaoke elevator singer! I agree with all these other people! This I-Tunes is RIGGED! It's NOT FAIR! Now u people know what songs kids want and you're gonna put the song on a $40 album! Ha! I found out your secret! Hmph. Who agrees with me? -Thank you so much Flame of Justice who agrees with me. You are so cool you richeous(sp?) one!!!!!!

Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar...
