Album Review

Cray went into a more soul-slanted direction for this solid collection, coarsening his vocal cords for "The Forecast (Calls for Pain)" and the rest of the set.

Rock solid and busting out

This album, which I believe represented the debut of the soulful yet accurate and astonishingly powerful (a rare combination) Kevin Hayes on drums, is a killer. The chemistry of the Cray Band was beginning to truly crystalize here, and the results show: if you can hold still for 'Labor of Love' - ask someone nearby to check you for a pulse. The addition of the Memphis Horns makes this a true R&B classic - one of my "desert island" CDs. There are no dead tracks (even Holdin' Court - though I'm no skiffle fan, holds its own). The Things You Do To Me - one of Robert's most soulful ballads, juxtaposes purposefully with its followup Walk Around Time, which I take literally, as I can't hear it and stay seated. While many may recommend Strong Persuader, this is the one Cray CD I would use to introduce a newcomer to this band's work - and know they'd be hooked for life.

one continuous groove....

more of the groove that RC is most famous for, rich with the Hammond B3 and horns. You will not be disappointed

A solid unique Robert Cray CD

Memphis Horns backing up the Robert Cray Band results in powerful blues/R&B type songs. "She used to move mountains, but now she just don't move me" - heavy lyrics like this throughout the CD! Enjoy!

Tin-eared critics have frequently damned him as a yuppie blues wannabe whose slickly soulful offerings bear scant resemblance to the real down-home item. In reality, Robert Cray is one of a precious few young blues-based artists with the talent and vision to successfully usher the idiom into the 21st century without resorting either to slavish imitation or simply playing rock while passing it off as blues. Just as importantly, his immensely popular records helped immeasurably in jump-starting the...
