A Second Wave Masterpiece

This album is one of those staples of the two-tone era that both defined and pushed the limits of ska music, with heavy new wave and reggae elements. It starts with the radio-ready "Mirror in the Bathroom" and accelerates through from there through Side A, maintains the velocity through the first half of Side B, drops off in "Can't Stand Losing You," and ends in a roots-reggae denoument that would make Clint Eastwood proud ("Jackpot"). Hard-edged, but not so hard that it isn't fun. Poppy, but still with character. Faithful to its roots, but not afraid to innovate. Rude as hell, but sweet enough that your bird can dance to it. It is as if The Beat (or "English Beat" if you prefer) put so much of itself out there in this one album, there was nothing left in the tank afterword, and they never quite duplicated the artistry after this album. Two Swords is my absolute favorite, but I have many favorites on this album.

Extended Bass Remix ?

Back in the 80's, I was a DJ at the New Wave Lounge on the Fort Lauderdale strip spinning the best in punk and New wave. One day, I was given a 12'' promo copy of the English Beat with 2 songs listed on it. One was 'Twist and Crawl' and I think the other was 'Mirror in the Bathroom''. The amazing thing about these remixes is that they were labeled Extended Bass Remixes. I have never seen them pressed to CD, nor have I ever seen them on iTunes. If you ever find that promo 2-song 12", please buy it and give me a ring, it is fantastic ! A very underated band, The English Beat will surprise you with their musicality and intelligent lyrics.

One of the earliest and most important ska revivalist groups, Birmingham's the Beat formed in 1978 (the band had to change its name to the English Beat in the U.S. to avoid confusion with Paul Collins' band of the same name). The multiracial band carved a distinct sound through the use of alternating lead vocals by guitarist Dave Wakeling and punk toaster/rapper Ranking Roger, supported by a tight band consisting of Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), and Everett Moreton (drums). The addition...
