Amazingly Consistent

Heyman writes and sings and plays as if his life depended on it, on this and every other of his albums. Some songs are better than others, but there are no "throwaways". This album, which supposedly is drawn from his back catalogue of unrecorded songs, is stirring, passionate, and catchy. Heyman is generous. Song number 17 on this 17-song album is a good as song number one, song number 8 and any other song on this amazingly consistent album from this consistently brilliant artist. Obviously, he brings to mind the talismanic names: Beau Brummels, Byrds, and Left Banke, but there's really no precedent for Heyman's combination of intensity, lyricism, musical chops, and hookiness, delivered with an almost Lincolnesque humility (deriving, no doubt, from the vocal limitations he heroically confronts and triumphantly overcomes). Best of all, Heyman has never allowed ugly guitar noise to seep into his work: he earns his power the old-fashioned way, with great songwriting, superb production and total commitment to the music.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Heyman began recording in the late '80s in the tradition of the studio nerd/one-man band, playing all instruments himself in his upper west side Manhattan apartment living room, named Brontasaurus, presumably after the classic song by the Move. He released the independent Actual Size EP in 1987 and followed with the full-length Living Room!! in 1988....
