Album Review

Grand Champeen continues to proffer solid corn-fed indie rock on disc number two, the wonderfully christened Battle Cry for Help, coming off like the Replacements if they, instead of aping the Stones, wanted to be cowboys. "One Foot on the Stage," a smoky alt-country hopper, smashes head-on into the early-period Soul Asylum-styled thrasher "Nothin' on Me" consecutively, nicely encapsulating the two extremes of the band. Occasionally the album tries to get too cute for its own good and ambles on a bit, but you can't fault the energy or individualistic flair of the Austin (by way of Chapel Hill and Colorado) four-piece. ~ Brian O'Neill, Rovi

Grand Champeen

This is an awesome band. Every song has such great character and meaning. Its nice to listen to a true band. I highly recommend this group.

Their Best!

This album is awesome top to bottom. The newest on (Dial T For This) is a close second right now and I think it will stand tall right next to this one over time. Someone get their hard-to-find out-of-print debut up here quick - SXSW is coming up soon and these guys win over a slew of new converts every year. One of the best live bands currently playing the bars. Catch 'em while you can.

where is the van?

This CD is great, love every song, but where is "out front by the van"? i dont know if its Champs choice not to have it for sale here but its sad that so many artists seem to turn their backs on their early stuff.

First coming together while at boarding school in the late '80s, the founding members of Grand Champeen decided early on that their brand of rock & roll would be energetic, straight-ahead, and loud. Taking their cues from the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, the Replacements, early Soul Asylum, Uncle Tupelo, and others, Grand Champeen crafts honest rock songs best listened to at maximum volume. Guitarists and vocalists Channing Lewis and Michael Crow met drummer Ned Stewart while attending boarding school...
