iTunes Review

This saxophonist’s fourth album was soulfully engaged with the strings-laden production sonics of mid-’70s R&B—but not at the expense of majestic soloing. Check out the progression of Washington’s long soprano spotlight on opener “Earth Tones”: He builds to peak intensity with a patience that plenty of other fusion artists don’t have. Later, he reinforces his connection to the core jazz tradition with a winning cover of Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower.”

The epitome of what smooth jazz is. Grover, bless his soul, could always be counted on to add class to any atmosphere. It would be great if the title track were available as a single. Why is it not?

Dude, You obviously don't know this genre. Grover was the benchmark for this style of fusion, which began in the early 1970's. There were and still are many pioneers, such as George Benson, the afremention Grover Washington Jr., the Crusaders (partially), Joe Sample (specifically), Bob James, Eric Gale, Freddie Hubbard (to some extent), Hubert Laws, Ronnie Laws, Earl Klugh, Stanley Turrentine, and many others that I can't remember....Show some respect! This genre is the introduction to "jazz", in the modern sense, for many who would never have made the discovery. Stanley

One of the most popular saxophonists of all time, Grover Washington, Jr. was long the pacesetter in his field. His roots were in R&B and soul-jazz organ combos, but he also fared very well on the infrequent occasions when he played straight-ahead jazz. A highly influential player, Washington pushed himself with the spontaneity and risk-taking of a masterful jazz musician. Grover Washington, Jr.'s, father also played saxophone and was his first influence. The younger son started playing music when...
