Album Review

Jazz Round Midnight is a pleasant 16-track sampler of some of the most laid-back and mellow tracks Cal Tjader recorded for Verve. Although there are some wonderful songs on the compilation, it is only useful for beginners, since the cut-and-paste nature of the collection will infuriate purisits and serious jazz listeners. However, for neophytes, it's a nice introduction, even it it is a little bit too low-key.

Soft and Spicy!

Like a film noir, this is campy early 60's latin jazz with just enough fluff to make a romantic mood for a couple who remember or want romance. First a correction "Sunset Blvd" is NOT with the Les Double Six, it is from a great disc with Claus Ogermann doing the string choir arrangements with "Under A Blanket of Blue" & "The Party's Over" pairing the vibist with the vocal group.
"Reza" and many of these are with the classic group, which included Willie Bobo, Armando Peraza,"Potato" Valdez, Lonnie Hewitt, Grady Tate and Herbie Hancock and tons more.

While Tjader got commercial success for his "Soul Sauce" tight latin gig for Verve, he wooed many a listener with what he could do with standards like the afore mentioned "Sunset Blvd" which puts this just out of reach for someone looking for soft strings and salsa! It is a good collection, but sadly too many of his good Verve discs are out of print, and make individual selections only available on this tyype of offering. This is still a wonderful collection of great Tjader. Look for "Warm Wave" or "The Prophet" on Verve LP or disc...they are the gems!

Good Collection

I really love Cal Tjader's stuff but there are a few errors with a song in this collection. The track labeled "Sunset Boulevard" is wrong. This track is actually called "Passe" from the Cal Tjader and Claus Ogerman album "Warm Wave" (which I think is Cal's MOST mellow album). "Sunset Boulevard" is in that album too, which may have caused the confusion. Also, adding to the above comment, the Les Double Six DID perform with Cal and Claus for three tracks in "Warm Wave," but they were not in "Passe," so they should not be included in the track info.

Cal Tjader was undoubtedly the most famous non-Latino leader of Latin jazz bands, an extraordinary distinction. From the 1950s until his death, he was practically the point man between the worlds of Latin jazz and mainstream bop; his light, rhythmic, joyous vibraphone manner could comfortably embrace both styles. His numerous recordings for Fantasy and Verve and long-standing presence in the San Francisco Bay Area eventually had a profound influence upon Carlos Santana, and thus Latin rock. He also...
