Modern Flows, Vol. 2

Modern Flows, Vol. 2

During 31-year-old trumpeter Marquis Hill’s formative years as a teenage music student in Chicago, his jazz, R&B, and hip-hop heroes were combining genres from all directions at once. Hill’s emergence after that stylistically inventive period shows on this acoustic cross-genre outing, which has an easy, velvety smoothness to it. Horn voicings from the classic post-bop era frame spoken-word artists such as M'reld Green and Brandon Alexander Williams, who perform with the rhythmic variety and melodicism of jazz singers. Hill, a 2014 Monk Institute Competition winner, doesn’t make heroics of either tradition or modernity, instead delicately honoring them both with a flow rooted in his deepest experience.
