Album Review

This release is more than a continution of The Bulgarian Women's Choir performing the present vocal tradition of Bulgaria. Volume 3 combines the extraordinary vocals of The Bulgarian State Radio & TV Choir as featured on Volumes 1 & 2, with the Trakia Choir, the Tolbuhin Choir and Radopi Smolian's Choir.

Amazing

This type of music won't be liked by most, but it is great music! It is a bit of an acquired taste. It is heavy for most listeners. I listened to it once and loved it. It is complex and interesting, one can never get bored of it. It is relaxing, a pleasure to listen when you are traveling.

buy it, but buy #1 first

This music is unique vocally. Some find it difficult, but once you let it into your audio world, it is there to stay. I never tire of it, as I do some world music. I collect world wide and always come back to the Bulgarian voices. The honesty of the voices and harmonies I find liberating. I don't start a painting without them.

Are your ears ready?

Almost western. Not eastern, exactly. Twilight zone, for sure. One does well to keep one's mind open during listening. The transport will happen to you, but only after really digesting the sound. An approachable track is Aychinko Pilia Chereno; start the journey there; then try Sekoi Fali. The chord sequences alone have the power to make you forget to breathe. Then there's the vocal techniques, the transitions, the folk melodies, the timbre, the chest voice, the power. This music came into my life 20 years ago; why do I love this stuff so much? I am a Phish/Radiohead/Mozart/Metheny/Oakenfold/Faure/Tupac/BT/Billie Holliday pilgrim. The appeal of these women confuses me. I am haunted by it.

His recordings, issued on various import labels before appearing on Nonesuch, made a big splash in western Europe and the US, cultivating vast new audiences for the group's dramatic adaptations of folk singing styles. Their spine-chilling harmonies, punctuated by...
