Editors’ Notes

Bands like Black English are so much fun. Evoking artists from The National to Meat Loaf to Future Islands, a love for drama is at the core of Black English’s music and makes for a fuller listening experience. Bradley Hanan Carter sings with a kind of stoicism and cloaked optimism, like a guy who's only seen things go downhill when he thought they were headed up, so he doesn’t dare hope aloud. The sextet’s resonant, richly textured pianos and swelling guitars—not to mention sly and mature humor—will likely strike a chord with those who have a few years under their belts. (For example, the lyrics to “Monday” include, “Monday, Monday, the cage comes down on me,” followed by a guitar riff redolent with New Order melancholy.) The anthemic opener, “Leave the Door Wide Open,” has an ‘80s drum sound and glistening sheets of guitar and synths; Carter’s vocals are wide open and needy, somber and searching. “Stay with Me” is profoundly romantic, so sensitive types should tread carefully. “I’m only human, I’m full of mistakes,” the song starts quietly before building to a grand, crushing finale.

Customer Reviews

Already looking forward to the next one

"There are two types of people in this world: those who like Neil Diamond, and those who don't. My ex-wife loves him."

Don't miss this gem!

One of the best albums I've listened to for years. If you don't check these guys out before they fill stadiums, you're a fool.
Love every second of it. Hands down.

Brilliant Debut

Well done, lads...
